WHAT IS PLASTEAX ?
PLASTEAX is a data platform dedicated to plastic environmental analytics. Here you can access best in class polymer and application specific waste management & leakage data, standardised and reconciled for all countries worldwide.
You are navigating the v1.0 of PLASTEAX, released on 7 April 2021. PLASTEAX v1.0 discloses plastic waste management metrics (e.g. collection and recycling rates) and plastic leakage metrics.
Generic datasets are available for over 200 countries (free of charge)
Best in class datasets are available for 8 countries, soon 13 (free of charge)
Best in class datasets are available for another 20 countries (pay per access), more countries will be developed on demand
Plastic leakage modelling parameters to be used for plastic footprinting are provided for use both at product or geographic level

Data is one of the key missing links to solving the plastic pollution crisis. PLASTEAX aims to provide more transparency and increase data quality in the plastic space.
Without action, plastic pollution will triple by 2040
Many initiatives have emerged to assess, act upon and/or compensate plastic leakage, as well as to promote circularity. All these initiatives need reliable plastic waste management data which are currently missing.
PLASTEAX has been created to fill this knowledge gap.
WHY PLASTEAX ?
PLASTEAX is developed by EA - Environmental Action as an open source, scientifically robust and transparent database.
The initial model behind the calculations has been based on UNEP - IUCN National Guidance for Plastic Pollution and Shaping Action.
The methodologies for modelling and primary data-sources used are completely transparent and available in the Methodology section from the platform. A governance mechanism is currently being set-up
The business model is combining free access of the data (for countries who benefitted from public funding) and pay per access for country studies which are not yet being funded. Once a country has been fully funded, it will be made available to all users for free.
As an iterative process, future versions of the platform will be release over time to expand both dataset coverage and functionalities

The information accessible on PLASTEAX is intended for a large variety of profiles, from policy makers to concerned citizens, from public to private sector. PLASTEAX datasets can be used by companies to run plastic footprint and/or plastic offsetting projects with the best in class, polymer/application specific data. The same information is also relevant for countries willing to prioritize interventions towards a reduction of plastic leakage into the environment. The synergy between private sector and public sector, illustrated in the bicycle model, is of paramount importance to ride the circularity track and reduce plastic leakage.
